Notifiable disease processes for Auckland and Northland - Te Tai Tokerau

 

Urgent disease notifications

Please send urgent disease notifications via eReferral in PMS (same as COVID notification eReferral).

Do not wait for laboratory confirmation before sending.

 

After sending an urgent disease notification eReferral:
  • In Auckland, outside of office hours please also call 09 623 4600 to inform the on-call medical officer of health. Visit Auckland HealthPathways for more information.
  • In Northland, during office hours please also call 09 430-4101 ext 60592. Outside of office hours please inform the Medical Officer of Health by phoning 09 430-4100 and asking for the on-call Health Protection Officer. Visit Northland HealthPathways for more information.

You no longer need to email a word document to notify public health.

DISEASES REQUIRING URGENT NOTIFICATION

Please send urgent disease notifications via eReferral in PMS (same as COVID notification eReferral). Do not wait for laboratory confirmation before sending.

  • Fish poisoning / marine toxin poisoning (including Ciguatera fish poisoning and Scombroid poisoning)
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis E
  • Ill traveller (e.g. diagnosed with a suspected notifiable disease upon arrival into New Zealand)
  • Listeria (invasive)
  • Measles
  • Meningococcal disease
  • Mumps
  • Paratyphoid
  • Pertussis
  • Shigella (culture positive and non-sonnei)
  • Viral gastroenteritis including norovirus (if two or more cases linked to the same source; there is a high-risk of onward transmission, or causative agent is non-infectious gastrointestinal intoxicants)
  • Typhoid
  • Outbreak of any notifiable disease – an outbreak is defined as two or more cases linked to a common source
RARE DISEASES REQUIRING URGENT NOTIFICATION

  • Anthrax
  • Botulism
  • Cholera (if toxigenic strain)
  • Diphtheria (if toxigenic strain)
  • Enterobacter / Cronobacter sakazakii
  • Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza
  • Haemophilus Influenzae type B (if probable/confirmed type B)
  • Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS)
  • Nipah
  • Plague
  • Poliomyelitis
  • Rabies and other lyssaviruses
  • Ricin poisoning
  • Rubella
  • Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)
  • Smallpox
  • Staphylococcal toxin poisoning
  • Tetanus
  • Viral haemorrhagic fevers, e.g. Ebola

NON-URGENT NOTIFIABLE DISEASES

A full list of diseases notifiable by health practitioners and laboratories to a medical officer of health is available from the Ministry of Health.

  • In Auckland, please send an eReferral. You can also email notify@adhb.govt.nz or call (09) 623 4600 for support or for more information.
  • In Northland, please send an eReferral to Notifiable Disease to notify public health. For support call (09) 430‑4101 ext. 60592. This number is available Monday to Friday, 8am - 4.30pm. After hours, leave a message on the answer phone (to be cleared next business day).
STI NOTIFICATIONS

Syphilis, gonorrhoea, AIDS and HIV infection should be notified to ESR.

REPORTING A HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE

Medical practitioners are also required to report to the local medical officer of health any patient suffering from poisoning or injury from hazardous substances (Section 143 Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996) or from chemical contamination of the environment (Health Act 1956), such as pesticide poisoning.

  • in Northland please call 09 430 4100 and ask for the on-call Health Protection officer

REQUIREMENTS FOR HEALTH PRACTITIONERS

Health practitioners are required by Section 74 of the Health Act 1956 to report to the medical officer of health (MOH) any patient they have 'reasonable suspicion' is suffering from a notifiable disease (list of diseases).

Medical practitioners are also required to report to the local medical officer of health any patient suffering from poisoning or injury from hazardous substances or from chemical contamination of the environment such as pesticide poisoning (section 143 2(A) of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996).

Sexually transmitted infections (STI) notifiable under the Health Act 1956 are syphilis, gonorrhoea, AIDS and HIV infection. These should be notified to ESR through its website, or through Auckland Region Community Health Pathways. ARPHS does not receive these notifications.
